How to connect your ad accounts to one platform (safely)

Connecting your Meta, Google, and TikTok accounts to a management tool takes a few minutes and it is the second step in getting set up — right after checkout. It is also the step people worry about most. Here is exactly what happens, what access you are granting, and why it stays reversible the whole time.

What “connecting an ad account” actually means

When you connect an ad account to a tool like Cesara, you are not handing over a login. You are granting a scoped, revocable permission through OAuth — the same mechanism behind every “Sign in with Google” button you have ever clicked. You log in on Meta's or Google's own page, review the list of permissions, and approve it. The tool receives a token. That token is what does the work.

The distinction matters more than it sounds. A password is a master key — whoever holds it can do anything you can do, including changing the password itself. A token is a labelled key cut for one job: it opens the campaign management door and nothing else, and you can melt it down from your side at any moment.

Why per-client OAuth beats sharing a login

The old way of giving an agency or a tool access was to share your username and password, or to email them a login. It is still common, and it is a bad idea for three plain reasons.

  • A shared password gives total control, not scoped control. There is no “only campaigns” version of your actual login — it is all or nothing.
  • You cannot cleanly take it back. Revoking means changing your password and hoping nothing else broke, rather than clicking one button.
  • You lose the audit trail. When everything runs through your single login, you cannot tell your own actions apart from the tool's.

Per-client OAuth fixes all three. Every connection is its own scoped grant, tied to your business, visible in your platform settings, and revocable independently. Cesara connects each account this way — never shared credentials, never a stored password. The platforms' Marketing APIs are built for exactly this, which is why the connection feels routine: you are using the mechanism Meta, Google, and TikTok designed for it.

A password is a master key. A token is a labelled key cut for one job — and you can melt it down from your side at any moment.

Exactly what access it grants — and what it doesn't

This is the part worth being precise about, because vague reassurance is not reassurance. Here is the honest split.

What Cesara can do

  • Read your campaign, ad set, and ad performance so it knows what is working.
  • Adjust budgets between campaigns, within the ceiling you set.
  • Pause underperforming ads and scale the ones that are converting.
  • Make the same edits you would make by hand — just daily, and without you having to remember.

What it cannot do

  • See or store your password. It was never part of the connection.
  • Log in as you, change your password, or touch your account security.
  • Change your billing details or move money out of your account.
  • Raise your total budget without your explicit, one-click approval.

That last point is the one that lets people sleep. Optimization moves money around inside the box you drew — it does not get to make the box bigger. Raising your ceiling is always a decision you make, not one the software makes for you. If you want the longer version of how that guardrail works, we wrote it up in how it works.

Connect your store, not just your ad accounts

There is a second connection that matters just as much, and people skip it because it feels optional. It is not. The ad platforms can only see what happens on the ad platform — a click, a view, an on-platform conversion event. They cannot see whether that click became a paying customer, or whether it was a $12 sale or a $400 one.

Connecting your Shopify or WooCommerce store closes that gap. Now optimization runs on real orders and real revenue. Instead of chasing the cheapest clicks — which are cheap for a reason — the tool can chase the traffic that actually buys. For a TikTok campaign especially, where cheap engagement is easy to manufacture, the store connection is what keeps the optimization honest about cost per real sale.

Illustrative

Two campaigns look identical on the ad platform: same spend, same click volume, similar on-platform conversion counts. Without a store connection, a tool would treat them as equals and keep funding both.

With Shopify connected, the picture changes. Campaign A's clicks turned into $2,400 of orders this week; Campaign B's turned into $600. Same cost, four times the return. Optimization can now shift budget toward A — a call it simply could not make on ad-platform data alone.

The whole thing is reversible

Nothing here is a one-way door. You can disconnect from inside Cesara, or revoke access directly from Meta Business settings, your Google account's connected-apps page, or TikTok — entirely from the platform's side, with no request to us and no waiting. The instant you revoke, the token stops working and the tool can do nothing further. Scoped and revocable is not a marketing line; it is how OAuth is built.

Connecting your accounts is the on-ramp, not the commitment. It is step two of five — checkout, connect, set your goal, add creative, launch — and it is the step that lets everything after it run on your real numbers. When you are ready for the full sequence, start with how to launch your first ad campaign.
